Help Raise Funds to Underwrite the Care for People
Facing Cancer in our Local Community
Cancer Support Community provides comprehensive psychosocial support and education programs for people facing cancer, right here in our local community. All of our services have clinical research* evidence to support their value and impact for cancer patients, they are always provided FREE OF CHARGE in order to be readily accessible to people affected by cancer in their time of need. In 2014, we served over 2,000 people affected by cancer. Each year, the need for our services grows, and we remain committed to serving anyone facing cancer when they need our support.
JOIN US as a fundraiser and help us meet the increasing demands
for our services in the community.
Every $500 raised will underwrite the care for a person facing cancer for an entire year. In addition, you will be proud to raise funds for an organization that spends 87 cents of every dollar to provide support groups, educational workshops, and healthy lifestyle classes for people facing any type of cancer.
About the Walk:
This 5K (3.1miles) walk around scenic Heather Farm Park is for friends and families to celebrate and honor the lives of those living or passed, who have been touched by cancer. All proceeds from the event will directly benefit Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area to provide support, education and hope free of charge to anyone facing cancer.
*A 2004 study conducted in collaboration with Stanford University showed that participants in our support groups developed a new attitude toward the illness, made important changes in their lives, gained better access to valuable information and resources, and became better partners with their physicians and health care team. Women with advanced breast cancer who participated in psychosocial support groups lived an average of 18 months longer than those who did not participate.
More recently, the “Stress and Immunity Breast Cancer Project” at Ohio State University has confirmed those results. This study included over 200 patients who were surgically treated for Stage II or III breast cancer. Half of the patients also received integrative care modeled after Cancer Support Community: psychosocial support groups, mind-body or adapted exercise programs, nutritional counseling and other patient education. Those receiving integrative, psychosocial care lived an average of 18 months longer, were 45% less likely to have recurrence, and were 56% less likely to die in the decade following their diagnosis.
